1 Corinthians 13: 4 "Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, it is not puffed up; ..."
Joseph was highly favored by his father but to his brothers, well that was a whole other story. Joseph's brothers were jealous of him and they wanted to kill him. If it was not for his brother Ruben, they would have killed him that day.
Instead, they threw Joseph in a pit and left him there for a bit. Things went from bad to worse for Joseph as he was sold into slavery. He was slandered by the wife of a rich and powerful man, and was put into prison.
To say that Joseph had a few bad days would be an understatement. The thing that stands out though, is the purity of heart that this man had. Never once did he complain, or take on self-pity. Actually, he did just the opposite. He always poured out in love.
While he sat in prison for the incident with the Potiphar's wife, he interpreted dreams, and he was spot on with his interpretations because the LORD was with him.
Fast forward a few years and the famine that Joseph told about in his king's dreams that he interpreted, was in full swing. Joseph is in charge of all the grain in the land. People came from great distances just to get grain to eat. Then Joseph's brothers came to seek food from Joseph. Joseph was glad to see all his brothers and to find out his father was still alive. Although Joseph played his brothers a bit to get the information he wanted to know, he never showed bitterness to them but instead he loved them and blessed them.
Joseph had every right, in the eyes of man, to be upset with his brothers, but Joseph did not see it that way. He, all thorough his life, Joseph just kept his eyes on the Lord's plans. When he finally revealed himself to his brothers, he wept with joy!
Joseph chose love! He overcame every bad circumstance by learning and growing from each one. Joseph understood a principle that we all need to hold on to. It is not what happens to us in life that defines us, rather it is how we respond to what happens to us that defines us!
